Pancreatitis, acute and chronic, ranges from self-limiting mild inflammation to severe necrotising disease with multi-organ failure and high mortality. Gallstone disease and alcohol excess account for the majority of acute cases; chronic pancreatitis leads to progressive exocrine and endocrine insufficiency and carries risk of pancreatic cancer. Endoscopic and surgical management of complications and pain are the primary interventional approaches.
