Periprosthetic joint infection is one of the most feared complications of arthroplasty, resulting in significant morbidity, repeated surgery, and healthcare costs. Two-stage revision with prolonged antibiotic therapy is the standard for chronic infection; DAIR may be appropriate for acute presentations. Biofilm-active antibiotics, novel anti-infective implant coatings, and biomarker-guided diagnosis are active areas of research.
