Palliative care addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering in patients with serious illness, with evidence that early integration improves both quality of life and, in some cancers, overall survival. Global access to palliative care remains deeply inequitable, with morphine availability a particular barrier in many countries. Advance care planning, symptom management, and family-centred care are the foundational competencies of the specialty.
